My Book Report Book Analysis

The author, Ann M. Martin, of the book, A Dog's Life: the Autobiography of a Stray, wrote this book because she wanted to teach kids the theme of the book, which is don't give up. Scholastic Press, which published the book in New York in 2005, selected a good book. The main focus of the book was never stop trying, and my personal thoughts about the book are that the book was great, and so was the dog. I believe the most important point in the book was when she found a forever home, after a life of adventure and travel. I think this book accomplished what it set out to do.

The theme of the book, A Dog's Life: the Autobiography of a Stray by Ann M. Martin, is never give up. I chose this theme because Squirrel doesn't give up trying to find her brother. No matter how many obstacles were in her way, she persevered and didn't give up. She stopped at nothing to find and save her litter mate. She put first things first, first finding her brother and then deciding what to do. Even though she never found her brother, she still loved him, and missed him dearly. Bone always had a special place in her heart.

Characters and Their Traits

Squirrel (also known as Daisy and Addie): Squirrel is a fun-loving dog, and follows the leader, her brother Bone, when they are together. She's enthusiastic and doesn't stop at anything to find her brother.

Bone: Bone is the leader to Squirrel. He loves playing and makes most of the choices. He hates humans and is scared of them. No matter what, he doesn't let his sister out of his sight when they're together.

Mother (her dog name is Stream): Stream is the mother of Bone and Squirrel. She cares deeply for them and doesn't want them getting hurt. She is caring, and was the only thing the litter mates knew as younger pups. She is afraid of humans and the fox named Mine.

Moon: Moon is a loving, caring dog. She looks a lot like Bone, and acts a lot like him, too. She has great companionship, and likes anyone who likes her.

My Book Report Summary

The book, A Dog's Life: the Autobiography of a Stray by Ann M. Martin, is about a dog who tells her life story. Squirrel was a dog born to a litter of 5 stray puppies. However, 3 died, so it was just Squirrel and her brother, Bone. The family lived together in a shed in the Merrion family's huge backyard. There were many other animals living on the premises, including cats, chickens, a family of mice, and a family of foxes, including Mine.Their mother was afraid of Mine, but was sad when Mine got shot. One day, Mother went out hunting, and never came back. After about a month, Bone decided to leave the property and go somewhere else, and Squirrel went with him. Soon, they were taken by a couple of humans who found them by the side of the road. The man didn't like them, so he threw them into a lot the next day. Bone was taken by a human, while Squirrel was left alone. She met a dog named Moon, and they traveled together as strays. After a rest in a town, Moon was run over and died. Squirrel was on her own again. In the spring and summer, she wandered; while in fall and winter, she stayed in a town or on a farm. After a few years, Squirrel found the lot where she and her brother had been abandoned. Soon, she knew she was an old dog by her black fur turning white, a filmy eye, bad hearing, and achy bones. It was cold early, and there were no farms around, so she just stayed in an old woman's shed for a few days. She made friends with the woman, named Susan, when she found her in the shed. Susan became her owner after giving her food and inviting her inside. Squirrel finally found her forever home. I really liked A Dog's Life because it was inspiring, yet it was a sad book.
